“Calvin University equips students to think deeply, to act justly, and to live wholeheartedly as Christ’s agents of renewal in the world.”
This is the mission statement of Calvin University. Founded by the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA) and named for 16th-century reformer John Calvin, Calvin has been wholeheartedly carrying out this mission since 1876. At Calvin, faith and curriculum come together in an academic climate where a rich kind of learning flourishes—learning that intentionally integrates Christian commitment, rigorous inquiry, and dedicated service in order to equip students to engage a broken world. Such an integrated educational project enables Calvin to hold a vital place in Christian higher education.
Calvin University is a Christ-centered community of more than 3,700 students from across the nation and around the world, 245 committed and caring Christian professors providing outstanding instruction, and 460 dedicated staff professionals. Calvin students study the liberal arts and select from a broad range of majors and professional programs. The university fosters scholarship that creates new knowledge, performs creative work, and sustains natural and cultural resources. A Calvin education, marked by scholarly engagement with enduring questions and emerging concerns, prepares students to answer the call to serve God as agents of renewal.
Calvin’s beautiful 400-acre campus in West Michigan is ideally located to create a close-knit community feel while providing a plethora of opportunities to engage with the vibrant city of Grand Rapids. The campus also serves as the base for more than 35 faculty-led study abroad opportunities Calvin offers around the world.
Ninety-nine percent of Calvin grads are employed or in graduate school within nine months of graduation. This result is driven through high-impact practices such as internship partnerships with employers and student-faculty collaboration that offers opportunities to engage in intensive research and creative work. And, in fall of 2017, Calvin further built on its success in preparing students for post-graduate life, with the introduction of a new program called Calvin LifeWork. The four-year, voluntary life-readiness program features learning tracks in vocation, career readiness, financial literacy and life skills, and leadership development. This unparalleled program takes the fear and uncertainty out of a student’s first steps into the post-grad world.
Clearly, Calvin makes a life-changing difference in the lives of its students, and U.S. News & World Report concurs, ranking the institution #1 overall among Midwest regional colleges in 2019 with high grades in commitment to undergraduate teaching, percentage of international students, undergraduate research, and financial value. Animated by its compelling mission, Calvin University is pursuing an exciting vision over the next decade.
“By 2030, Calvin will become a Christian liberal arts university with an expanded global influence. We envision Calvin University as a trusted partner for learning across religious and cultural differences and throughout the academy, the church, and the world. Calvin University will be animated by a Reformed Christian faith that seeks understanding and promotes the welfare of the city and the healing of the world. We welcome all who are compelled by God’s work of renewal to join us in the formative pursuits of lifelong learning, teaching, scholarship, worship, and service.”
